My name is Mevagh (that's mee-va). I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, where I studied Fine Art at the National Art School in Darlinghurst. I now live in the Bega Valley on Djiringanj Yuin land. I'm an artist specialising in animal and pet portraits.
I have always had a passion for animals and art and a fascination for the cycles of life and death. I have a long history of working with animals, from a mobile petting zoo wrangler to a kennel hand and veterinary assistant.
I took a detour from art-making to live a simple life on a small farm during my twenties. Food was cooked on an open fire, stoked with wattle twigs from the forest. The outdoor kitchen was shared with chickens and guinea fowl (and occasionally two naughty mules). Goats were milked and led to pasture every morning, and life revolved around the rhythms of the seasons and the animals.
I have come to have an intimate knowledge and understanding of animals, and of how deeply they can inhabit our lives. Translated through paint, I wish to celebrate the connections we form across species, each painting a devotion.
These days I live by the coast with a much smaller menagerie but more time to spend in the studio. The cormorants in the bay and the dove in the neighbour's olive tree are calling to be painted.
